Program Notes

Negative Space is defined as “a term used in art to describe the space surrounding a subject”. Art that focuses on negative space focuses not on the subject of the artwork, but instead on the area surrounding the subject. With this piece, I wanted to not only highlight the music, but also the surrounding silence. I believe that silence is one of the most powerful colors a composer can paint with. Though simple in nature, if used correctly it can have an incredible emotional effect on audiences and performers alike. This piece highlights silence, and its place not only in music but also in everyday life.

Negative Space also deals with the topics of distance and space. Since moving to Los Angeles, I have found myself a great distance away from home and the familiar. At some times, this distance has been uncomfortable and even terrifying. However, at others, it has helped provide a space for me to grow. Negative Space invites audiences and performers alike to reflect on distance, space, and silence. How does it feel? Is it uncomfortable? Is it relieving? How does one's own interpretation of space change throughout the piece? My hope is that Negative Space will help encourage people to ask these questions and show people that silence and distance do not always have to be uncomfortable. Instead, it can open up one's life to a new world.
