Program Notes

Life is full of mountains that must be climbed. No matter whether they are physical or emotional, all summits lead to something new. Beyond the Summit encapsulates the emotions that graduating students, such as myself, feel when finally graduating from high school and finding out what lies ahead. I have been a part of the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestra and its Wind Ensemble for the past three years. When I was asked to write a piece for the Wind Ensemble, I knew I wanted to address an idea that was relevant to the group. Every spring, we bid farewell to the seniors in the group as they move on to new adventures. This piece details the moment graduating students climb over the mountain that is high school and finally view what is on the other side. Some people believe that the summit of an event or experience is the most important part; however, I argue that it is often more rewarding to finally see what was hidden on the other side. I hope that this piece can inspire this year's graduating class as well as future generations to welcome and look forward to the change beyond the summit.
